Iwood Health – Summer Newsletter

A Season of Joy and Connection

Summer has a way of opening things up.

There’s a shift that happens, subtle at first, where life feels less like preparation and more like participation. Less about what’s coming next, and more about being fully here.

This is the season of connection: to ourselves, to others, to the simple joy of feeling a bit more alive in our own skin. It’s where expression comes more easily, laughter sits closer to the surface, and energy naturally wants to move outward.

“A joyful heart is good medicine,”

As you read this, let it be a small pause in your day, a moment to step into that brighter rhythm and notice what it stirs in you. At Iwood Health, whatever therapy you come for Acupuncture, Hypnotherapy, Nutritional Therapy, Craniosacral Therapy, Kinesiology, or Counselling, this is the space we hold for you: to support that return to vitality, clarity, and ease.

So let this be your invitation into Summer. Not as an idea, but as a feeling you can recognise immediately and say: “Yes… that is exactly what I need.”

Summer according the Chinese Medicine – By Dan

In Traditional Chinese Medicine, Summer corresponds to the Fire element, governed by the Heart and Shen (Spirit). When Qi flows freely in this season, the body feels open, light, and responsive—breath expands easily, the chest is unrestrained, and there is a natural sense of warmth, vitality, and connection. This reflects the outward, expressive nature of Summer energy. When Qi becomes blocked, it may present as tension, restlessness, fatigue, or emotional unease. Through acupuncture, cupping, Tui Na, and bodywork, the aim is to restore smooth Qi flow and calm the Heart. Supporting this at home through gentle movement, sunlight, and open breathing to maintain balance and ease.

“When the Heart is at ease, the Shen (Spirit) is bright.”

Staying healthy through the summer – by Hazel

Staying healthy through the summer doesn’t need to be complicated—even if you’re busy or short on prep time. A couple of key focuses can help you feel energised, resilient, and ready to enjoy the season.

Start with hydration. While it’s important year-round, it becomes essential in warmer months when your body loses more fluids and electrolytes through sweat. Staying well-hydrated supports energy levels, physical performance, blood flow, and muscle function, while also helping regulate blood pressure. Aim for around six to eight cups of fluids daily. This can include water, herbal teas, diluted juices, and water-rich foods like watermelon, cucumber, lettuce, and tomatoes. If you’re active or spending long periods in the heat, you may need a bit more.

Sun protection isn’t just about sunscreen and clothing—your diet can also play a role. Foods rich in vitamin C, such as oranges, lemons, strawberries, kiwis, red peppers, and leafy greens, help combat oxidative stress caused by sun exposure. Pair these with vitamin E sources like avocados, almonds, sunflower seeds, spinach, and broccoli.

These two nutrients work together to support skin health and may help reduce signs of premature ageing.

Importantly don’t overlook beta-carotene (a precursor to vitamin A), which contributes to skin protection and repair. You’ll find it in brightly coloured produce like carrots, sweet potatoes, and red or yellow peppers. These foods not only support your skin but also add variety and colour to your meals.

Bright days, Restless Nights: Helping Light Sleepers Ease into Summer – By Louise

Writing on International Dawn Chorus Day feels fitting as the lighter mornings of summer arrive. The human brain evolved to interpret birdsong as a signal that the world around us is safe. Yet for anyone lying awake at dawn, the chorus may feel less reassuring and more like another reminder of a restless night.

In my work delivering Cognitive Behavioural Therapy for Insomnia (CBTi), combined with hypnotherapy, I help people notice the thoughts, feelings and habits that disturb peaceful sleep. Together we gently build new patterns that support deeper rest and reduce sleep anxiety.

Small shifts can help calm a busy nighttime mind: soften the muscles involved in mental chatter. Let the jaw loosen, as if a gentle weight rests along it. Notice any tension around the eyes and allow it to release. As the face relaxes and the breath slows, the body and mind move into a sleep-ready state.

A settled Heart anchors the Shen (Spirit); a restless Heart scatters the Shen

What if we looked beyond the Symptoms? – By Lisa

Everything I do in Kinesiology is about going back to foundations, asking why something is happening, rather than just managing the symptoms. When the foundations are supported properly, everything else has a much better chance of falling into place.

This is an invitation to listen differently, to reconnect with what your body truly needs. In the busyness of life, especially during an active summer, it’s easy to keep pushing through. But when we pause and support the body’s foundations, energy can return, balance can be restored, and things can begin to feel lighter.

If something feels off, there may be a deeper reason. You don’t have to keep guessing.

Listening to the body’s needs can be the first step back to yourself and you will warmly welcomed here whenever you’re ready.
